Theory and analysis of price information and its importance have typically assumed that the information is correct. Additionally, most analyses have centered on general price information assuming homogeneous products. This paper examines the implications of incorrect price information on the basis of quality, with evidence from prior research on cotton prices used as an illustration. Results of a conceptual analysis indicate that quality has direct implications on the production and marketing process. Incorrect information on prices of different quality leads to distortions in the market and market inefficiency. |

Recent studies have investigated the efficiencies of policies that use several policy instruments simultaneously (for example, a policy that uses a production subsidy combined with a production quota). Several studies of very specific cases find that optimal combination of two policy instruments is more efficient than optimal independent use of either. In this note we demonstrate using set theory and maximization theory, that all such specific results are examples of a more general result, which is that by combining m instruments efficiently, a government can always be at least as efficient as when using a subset of those m instruments. This result holds for any of the several definitions of "efficiency" in the literature. |

Several international agencies have in recent years sought to establish a generally accepted code of behaviour to be observed by countries in formulating their agricultural policies. The objectives and vision of problems stimulating these endeavours have varied. OEEC aimed primarily at coordination of the agricultural policies of participating countries in order to increase efficiency and incomes in agriculture for the region as a whole. GATT and FAO have been primarily concerned with the repercussions of domestic agricultural problems upon the levels and stability of international trade, with the consequences for the terms of trade of primary-exporting countries, especially of those in a less advanced stage of economic development, and with the need to... |

Hen quotas were virtually freely transferable within Victoria when they were first introduced in 1975. The 1980's have witnessed a series of changes to regulations over quota transfers. Initially these changes were components of a plan to phase out quotas but that is no longer on the policy agenda. Quotas remain but without the advantages of free transferability. It is well established that restrictions on quota transfers in general lead to production inefficiencies. Another undesirable side-effect is that the value of quota and magnitude of quota rent are more difficult to measure when quota transfers are restricted, adding to the difficulties of assessing the effects of the regulations. In the Victorian egg industry these general problems are confounded... |

Variations in agricultural productivity in different states across the country are mainly due to large differences in the level of adoption of selected agricultural technologies and the underlying determinants of adoption of these technologies. Agricultural technologies selected in this paper include high-yielding varieties of seeds, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, use of machinery, etc. The pattern of adoption has been examined across the country based on the 54th round of NSSO dataset. The quantification of adoption has been carried out for each state in the form of a novel ‘adoption index’. The relation between adoption index and status of the infrastructure in the corresponding state has been examined. The strong correlation between adoption index... |

With the rapid increase in consumption of some livestock products in Indonesia, expansion of domestic production of these commodities may enhance smallholders' incomes, increase rural employment and add to the country's trade balance. Policy analysis matrices (PAMs) were constructed to estimate divergences between private and social costs and returns in poultry and pig production in selected regions of Indonesia. In each case, producers' use of capital was subsidized but feed input private costs exceeded social values, and output prices received by producers fell short of values based on world prices. Production of all products as import substitutes was socially profitable, but in many instances private returns to farmers were negative. Product price... |

The Dominican government is currently undertaking many programs in the food and fiber sector which are expected to improve agricultural sector performance which in turn is important for the development of the whole economy. Thus, it is important to identify the general strengths and weaknesses of the system "as is" in order to carefully select subsequent specific studies about the Dominican food and fiber system. Although this study is general, it is nonetheless valuable since it contributes to a basic and introductory understanding of the Dominican case. The main objective of this study is to describe the general role that the government might play in the Dominican food and fiber sector in order to obtain more efficiency and equity among the systems'... |
